What to see

The sanctuary was established in 1630, after the plague had ceased, at the unanimous desire of the survivors, as a sign of devotion to the Madonna and gratitude to God. On the site, there was already a small chapel with a 15th-century effigy of the Virgin, which can now be admired above the main altar. In three years, the most important works were completed (it was inaugurated on August 5, 1634), but it was embellished and finished in the following century. The Sanctuary, remarkable in its architectural lines and beautiful in its dominant position, does not have the notoriety of other Marian places, but the devotion of the people has remained unchanged over the centuries.

  Caino

  Continuing uphill along the mule track, you first reach the ancient part of Vercana, then continue along the well-maintained path to the Church of San Sebastiano and onward to Caino. Don't miss the small cemetery, which offers an extraordinary view of the lake and Legnone, making you want to linger a little longer.
